چکیده

Considerable progress has been made in the development of technologies to support distributed multimedia computing, but application platforms are needed to make such technology accessible to application programmers. This paper sets out requirements for such platforms and discusses the role of operating systems in object-oriented platform support. We describe an initial approach to providing such a platform which attempted to factor out all realtime aspects of multimedia support onto a hardware based multimedia network interface unit. This solution has been partially successful but lacks the flexibility and level of integration subsequently demanded by application programmers. Our response has been to redesign the multimedia network interface unit, placing more emphasis on the provision of dynamic services which require real-time operating system support. The new design described in this paper exploits and extends features of a distributed object-oriented micro-kernel to provide the necessary system wide support,

Adaptive QoS Aware Binding of Persistent Multimedia Objects

The heterogeneity of distributed multimedia systems in terms of hardware, operating systems, programming languages, data formats, compression formats, available resources, and QoS requirements imposes severe problems. The purpose of the middleware platform is to provide interoperability and portability of distributed system services and applications. However, todays middleware platforms, like C...

A Service - Centred Approach to QoS - Supporting MiddlewareWork - in - Progress

The demand for QoS-support by mid-dleware platforms is continuously increasing, particularly in application domains such telecommunications or multimedia. Current object-oriented middleware, however, is not well suited to fulll this demand. In this paper, we propose a service-centred approach to QoS-supporting middleware, introducing the notion of smart proxies to achieve location transparency ...

Modelsaz: An Object-Oriented Computer-Aided Modeling Environment

Modeling and simulation of processing plants are widely used in industry. Construction of a mathematical model for a plant is a time-consuming and error-prone task. In light of extensive advancements in computer science (both hardware and software), computers are becoming a necessary instrument in industrial activities. Many software tools for modeling, simulation and optimization of proces...

A CORBA-Based Distributed Multimedia System

As high-speed, broadband networks replace slower, narrowband networks, multimedia applications are more widely used today than ever before. Distributed multimedia applications are, however, very difficult to develop and manage. This is mainly due to the lack of appropriate support in conventional operating systems. In order to solve this problem, we have developed an object-oriented distributed...

A distributed object platform infrastructure for multimedia applications

Although distributed object computing has developed rapidly over the past decade, and is now becoming commercially important, there remain key application areas inadequately supported by current standards and implementations. This paper describes research aimed at support for one of these areas: distributed soft real-time/ multimedia applications. The approach is to provide a low level platform...
